calgary-real-estateContrary to popular belief, big cities like Calgary are a great place to raise a family. The hardest part is deciding which community suits your individual needs. We list our favourite Calgary neighbourhoods for families by category drawing on important factors like schools, amenities, recreation, and friendliness.

Highest Child Population: Parkland

If you're looking to mingle with other families, Parkland has the highest percentage of children under 14 years of age. It consistently ranks as one of the friendliest Calgary neighbourhoods. The Parkland Community Association is very active and hosts a number of programs for kids including Cubs & Beavers, Sparks & Brownies, karate classes, soccer, and hockey. Affordable homes with large yards, and close proximity to Fish Creek Provincial Park make this a very attractive community for active families.

Safest Neighbourhood: Discovery Ridge

Just 12 years old, the community of Discovery Ridge didn't take long to establish itself as one of the safest Calgary neighbourhoods. With lots of young families living in the area, and an active Block Parent Association, Discovery Ridge enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in the city. Parents can have the peace of mind in knowing that their children are growing up in a safe environment. In addition, kids here get to play in a live natural playground as there are acres of parks and greenspace to keep them busy. For these reasons and more, Discovery Ridge gets our vote for the safest family friendly Calgary community.

Best Access to Schools: Tuscany

With over 12 nearby schools to choose from including public, and private options, Tucany should be on your list if you value a good education. Located right in town, Tuscany school (K-4) is within walking distance from most homes. Tuscany is also home to one of the top rated Catholic schools in Calgary: St. Basil (K-8), which includes community service projects as a part of its curriculum. For continuing education, the community is a short drive from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, University of Calgary, and Alberta College of Art and Design.

Most Child Friendly Neighbourhood Overall: Arbour Lake

The tight-knit lakeside community of Arbour Lake has everything a family could possibly want: parks, recreational facilities, quality schools, and friendly neighbours. Easy access to shopping, restaurants and major roads, Arbour Lake is great for families on the go. Only 20 minutes away from the downtown core, commuters can spend less time on the road, and more time with their families. The lake itself provides kids with endless recreational activities like swimming, kayaking, canoeing. Some of the other nearby attractions include Crowfoot Crossing, a Cineplex Odeon movie theatre, YMCA, and Amaranth Whole Foods Market.
