The Best Calgary Dog Parks & Off-Leash Areas

With spring in full swing and summer almost upon us, there’s no better time to get outdoors with your furry friend. Calgary has the largest number of off-leash dog parks, as well as the largest amount of off-leash space (close to 1300 hectares!) in all of North America! With 150 public off-leash dog parks located throughout the city, it can be difficult to decide where you should take Fido. To make it easier, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best Calgary dog parks for dogs (and humans) to enjoy. For a full list of off-leash areas and helpful information, visit The City Of Calgary website.

Sue Higgins Park

Southeast | Southland Drive and Deerfoot Trail SE | 62 hectares

Formerly known as Southland Park, Sue Higgins Park has been deemed by many as Calgary’s premier off-leash dog park, as it's home to Calgary’s largest fenced off-leash area. Nestled along the west bank of the Bow River, the park also features lots of pathways and hiking trails. This is the perfect place to visit if your dog likes to swim or play in the water, and is especially fantastic on those hot summer days.

River Park/Sandy Beach Park

Southwest | 4500 14A St. SW | 54 hectares combined

River Park and Sandy Beach Park span along the Elbow River and offer a little bit of everything for you and your pooch. These two Calgary dog parks offer a beautiful, natural setting featuring mature trees, plenty of benches and picnic tables, and even a dog water fountain! Getting to the river is trickier than it sounds (go down a narrow and steep path, through an on-leash area) and is completely worth it: just across the bridge, you’ll be rewarded with a small forested area and off-leash river access.

Nose Hill Park

Northwest | 5620 14th St. NW | 1129 hectares

A natural environment park with native grassland, Nose Hill Park is the largest natural area in Calgary. The majority of this park is off-leash and residents of nearby neighbourhoods can often be found here with their furry friends. If you’re looking for a dog park with lots of open space and a true prairie feel, this is the place for you.
