Your May Long Weekend Plans

Explore some old haunts, learn new skills, or visit the past this weekend at one of Calgary’s many May long events. We’ve compiled a short list of things to do, if you’d like to see!

Your Town is Our Town

Hosted in one of Calgary’s most iconic buildings, the Lougheed house, the exhibit Your Town is Our Town showcases the evolving streetscapes of Calgary neighbourhoods. See days past of your own community, and learn about the roots of the city. The exhibit has been open for a few weeks, and your extra-long weekend certainly merits a trip to the Beltline to check it out.

Survival Skills Night At Telus Spark

You probably have a strategy or two up your sleeve for a zombie apocalypse, but have you ever actually tested out your skills? What about for more practical situations, such as a snow storm? Being prepared is a complementary asset to homeownership, so why not brush off your 72 hour survival kit and test your wits at the Telus Spark.

This Adults Only Night will feature guests from the SAIT School of Manufacturing and Automation and the School of Health and Public Safety. Test your CPR skills on a dummy, get suggestions for your bug out bag, and learn how to start a fire.

Doors open at 6pm on May 14, and advanced tickets are available online.

Heritage Park

A family favourite, Heritage Park, opens this weekend to the delight of kids, history buffs and pancake lovers alike. Every morning this weekend, free flapjacks will welcome guests to the Historical Village, Gasoline Alley, and candy shoppe that so many fondly remember. It’s the park’s 51st season, so why not help them celebrate!

Pop-Up Puppets

Craft your way through a puppet pop-up workshop, at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre, this Saturday, May 16. Paper is the medium of choice here, your base for a puppet performance. Puppet masters will guide you and your child through the making process, and it will all come together as a live show of Shel Silverstein’s True Story.

No matter which event you choose, we wish you a fun-filled, safe May long weekend.
