Anyone who’s tried to sell a home before can tell you that winter can be a hard time to get a buyer; it can be hard to tell what a yard is like when it's covered in snow, and many people don’t want to choose a home purchase in the dark of winter evenings. Once the days lengthen and the sunshine starts beaming into your home, prospective buyers become more active in their search for a new home.

So, with the Calgary winter officially gone and the weather warming up, now is a great time to brush out the cobwebs and spring clean your home. Whether you are just looking at brightening up your home for your own benefit, or because you’re looking to sell, a good spring cleaning will make your home feel more inviting and fresh.

Spring cleaning is best done on a day that’s warm enough for you to open up the windows in your home. When your house has been fairly shut up for the whole winter, it can feel rather dusty and stale by the time spring rolls around. If the day is bright, so much the better; sunshine brightening up your home will let you see where the cobwebs are hiding in the corners of your rooms.

5 Spring Cleaning Tips to Help Get the Job Done

Work on one room or one activity at a time: Depending on your preference, choose to either clean one entire room at a time or pick one activity that needs to be done in each room to concentrate on. Some activities, like cleaning the windows or dusting cobwebs out of the corners of rooms, work especially well this way. If you don’t have enough time to set aside to clean an entire room, try organizing just a closet first.

If you’re working with cleaners, make sure you ventilate the room well: The chemicals given off by some cleaners can make you quite sick if you spend the day breathing them in; also, consider arming yourself with some heavy duty rubber gloves to protect your hands.

Organize as you go: Keep a box centrally located while you’re organizing to put things in that you don’t need or use anymore. These things can be given away, sold, or donated. In most cases, it’s a good idea to have a bag for garbage as well; it’s amazing the broken things that we all hang on to.

Repair & upgrade: If you’re already doing a deep clean to areas like the bathrooms and kitchen, now is a good time to also tackle that dripping faucet or upgrade your showerhead. Consider upgrades that allow you to save water or electricity. Consult the experts at your favourite home improvement store for assistance for best results.

Don’t forget the outside: Now is a great time to clean up and repair your outdoor entertaining areas as well. Once the warm weather kicks in, you’ll be glad that you did! Powerwash or scrub down your deck or patio, service your barbeque, and clean off your patio chairs.

Whether you’re doing it for your own sake, or to dazzle prospective buyers, spring cleaning your home can really help clear away the winter blahs and prepare you for the warmer months to come. While it can seem like a daunting task, it’s definitely time well spent!
