We recently blogged about prepping your Calgary home for spring, and touched briefly on HEPA filters for your allergies. Now that the sun is shining and we’re beginning to see the signs of spring, we thought we’d dive deep deeper into spring home tips by tackling the pesky topic of seasonal allergies.
As part of your massive spring clean, you should take stock of how your home could be hindering your lifestyle. The fix can be as simple as a vinyl mattress cover (dust-mite proof) or as in-depth as a massive cleaning.
In The Bedroom
Summer means more time outdoors and less time curled up on a bed stacked with lofty pillows. Pare down the bedroom to not only cut down on the time it takes to make the bed, but to also reduce allergens. For everything that has to stay, get a dust-mite proof cover. These slip over the mattresses and pillows are hidden by the sheets and blankets. Don’t forget weekly washings at hot temperatures!
Reducing clutter under the bed will leave less hiding places for dust bunnies, so add it to your checklist for the bedroom.
Same goes for your closet. If you’re breaking out your boxes of spring clothes, leave space on the floor so you can easily vacuum.
Kitchen & Living
For a quick fix in the kitchen and living rooms, start by washing everything you can. Take the covers off the couch cushions, wash the curtains, and steam clean your carpet. Better yet, replace heavy curtains with a lighter version. A fresh slate will help you keep on top of mini cleans throughout the summer.
Still having problems? Try an air purifier. This handy tool is the allergy version of a humidifier: it cycles the air through a filter and leaves it airborne-allergen free!
Allergens go far beyond pollen and dust mites, especially in the bathroom. Watch out for mold, which thrives in humid environments. Luckily Calgary is fairly dry, so proper ventilation should help with prevention. Crack open those windows and keep on top of dust with your favourite natural cleaners (harsh chemicals can make your symptoms worse!).
